The grandmother and cousin of a 4-year-old Augusta boy were charged late Friday with child cruelty after putting the boy in an attic to hide marks of abuse, authorities said.
Aileen Satofaiga, 45, and Preston Kelly, 19, are both being held for cruelty to children under Georgia’s Family Violence Act.
On Friday, officials at Warren Road Elementary School called police to conduct a welfare check on the 4-year-old boy. He hadn’t been seen at school for several days and a school official had received an anonymous call advising that the boy was being abused by his grandmother, Satoafaiga, at her home on Buckhead Court.
“The Sheriff’s Office was also advised that Satoafaiga was hiding the child due to the marks on it body,” sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel C. Carrier Jr. said in a press release.
Deputy William Walker, the initial responding Deputy called for assistance from CID after arriving at the residence and speaking with Satoafaiga.
Investigators responded to the scene and the child was located in the attic of the residence being held by Kelly, who is the boy’s cousin.
Fortunately, the boy was found to have non-life threatening injuries to his body. He was transported to GHSU for treatment and expected to recover fine from the injuries, Sgt. Carrier said.
Satoafaiga and Kelly were taken into custody without incident.
