Aiken Mom Leaves Child Alone in Car to Shop

An Aiken mother was arrested Tuesday after leaving her 2-year-old girl in the car alone while shopping at Hobby Lobby, authorities said.

Denise Zimmerman, 42, surrendered Tuesday morning to face charges of unlawful neglect of a child in the Sept. 17 incident. She was bonded out and released by Tuesday afternoon.

A witness saw the girl alone in a Chevrolet Tahoe and called police after waiting 10 minutes to see if someone came back, a public safety report says. The child was strapped into a car seat, and the vehicle was running.

When Aiken officers arrived, the child complained of being hungry. Yet Zimmerman did not return until almost 20 minutes after police arrived. According to the report, Zimmerman said she saw cops near the car from the store window, but she kept shopping because she thought everything was OK. She also told police her daughter had been sick and that is why she left her in the car.

An officer asked the mother whether she had any snacks for the child since she was hungry, and the mother said no.
