Aiken Robber Caught While Trying to Rob Again

-

A suspect in last night’s attempted robbery at A+ Package Store on Whiskey Road in Aiken was captured after he tried to rob someone else nearby, authorities said.

Ray Charles Smalls Jr., 35, of Aiken, was captured when Aiken County deputies put up a perimeter and caught him on Dry Branch Road, according to sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah.

Smalls walked into the liquor store about 6:30 p.m. Monday and “gave the impression that he had a weapon, demanded money, and fled the scene on foot,” the captain said.

Sheriff’s deputies and assisting law enforcement agencies responded to the area where a manhunt ensued. The Sheriff’s Office Dispatch center received a 911 call from another victim of a strong arm robbery on Valley Drive, describing the same suspect from the A+ Package Store. The subject was captured shortly thereafter.

Smalls will be charged with strong armed robbery. Assisting law enforcement agencies were New Ellenton Police Department, S.C. Highway Patrol, Aiken DPS, and SLED.
