An arrest has been made in the summer rape of an Augusta woman who was attacked while walking on a lonely trail near Kmart on Gordon Highway.
Carlos Rodrecus Grace, 31, has been charged with rape in the Aug. 13th attack.
It was 8 a.m. on a Thursday morning when the 43-year-old woman was walking the trail behind Bussey’s Auto Glass on Gordon Highway. Here is the woman’s account to deputies of what happened:
The suspect approached her from behind on a bicycle and started talking to her. “What’s a pretty lady like you doing walking the woods alone?” he asked. Being a friendly woman, she told him about her past relationships and how she was trying to get off drugs.
Grace mentioned that he had just got out of a bad relationship as well. The victim went to light a cigarette and the suspect showed her the handle of a gun. The man got off his bicycle, grabbed her around the neck with his right hand and threw her to the ground.
The victim started screaming because she was afraid he was going to rape her.
“Are you going to kill me?” she asked him.
“If you don’t give me what I want, I might kill you,” he reportedly said.
The suspect then raped the woman. After he was done, the woman got up and ran out of the woods and onto the side of Boost Mobile. She ran across Gordon Highway to the Waffle House, where she was able to call 911 for help.
The victim said the rapist ran across Gordon Highway through the Kmart parking lot.
Deputies found the suspect and chased him to an abandoned apartment behind Haynie Drive, according to the sheriff’s report. At the time, Grace was only charged with obstruction and criminal trespassing. Investigators sent off forensic evidence in the rape case and it returned in November, leading to last week’s arrest of Grace on a felony rape charge.
Grace is a repeat offender with a history of simple battery and family violence. He also has convictions for forgery, harassing phone calls, and criminal trespassing. He spent a month in jail this year after pleading down a battery case.
In an interesting twist, Grace is the same man who was allegedly attacked by his drunk girlfriend in June when he refused to have sex with her. The arrest of Tabatha Lee Grooms (pictured) was a story that spread internationally because of the woman’s sad mugshot. Grace remains in the Richmond County Jail under no bond.
