Jamez Hubbard, 22, was charged with cruelty to children in the first degree, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s report.

The child’s mother left the girl in the care of a cousin on July 25, 2014, so she could work the third shift at Walmart. The cousin lives at the mother’s house on Windsor Spring Road house in Hephzibah and had her boyfriend, Hubbard, there with her, the report said.

The mother returned just after 7 a.m. but she went straight to bed and did not see the injuries until she got up at 3 p.m. Her little girl had burn marks on her lower back that appeared to be from cigarettes. A deputy also saw that she had bruises on her eyes, the report said.

The mother said that when she confronted Hubbard he began stuttering and said “It ain’t like you say.” The woman ordered Hubbard to get out. He did leave his iPhone behind, which was collected by a sheriff’s investigator, the report said.

Hubbard’s girlfriend claimed she did not hear anything during the night except for a “quiet slap.”

The deputy drove the mother and child to University Hospital so that the girl could be treated. A caseworker with the Department of Family and Children Services was also notified, the report said.
