An Augusta man yelled “Obama’s White” to a white Army soldier at the Social Security Office Friday and then struck the uniformed officer in the back of the head, authorities said.
Suspect Ronald Harper, 46, then attacked a responding deputy by punching him in the face, a report says. Harper is being held on charges of simple battery and felony obstruction of an officer.
According to the victim, Harper was in line behind him at the Social Security office and suddenly put his arm around the white soldier, shook his hand and said, “Obama’s White.” The suspect then shouted “Obama’s White” to the room full of people.
The soldier said he shrugged his shoulder to get the suspect’s arm off him, and a few moments later, the man hit him in the back of the head.
“I believe there were plenty of racial overtones in it,” the victim told The Jail Report. “The reason why he hit me, I don’t know. I just think he hated everyone who is in uniform.”
The victim, who asked not to be identified, said he went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a mild concussion.
