Evans High Student Arrested for Assaulting Teacher

-

An Evans High School student was arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a teacher, authorities said.

Brandon Manuel, 18, was in homeroom Wednesday morning when teacher Elizabeth Smith came into the class to make sure students were using the time to study, a report says. Smith told Manuel to put his book bag on the floor.

The student threw the book bag on the floor. Smith told him he should show more respect to his teacher, and Manuel replied, “You’re not my teacher” and told Smith to get out of his face, according to the report.

The teen then stood up and pushed the 55-year-old woman twice by her chest and left the classroom.

Smith said she didn’t have injuries but wanted to prosecute the student for simple battery.

Witnesses told deputies they saw the incident, and Manuel was charged with simple battery on a school official. He was transported to jail and later released on a $1,600 bond.
