Hephzibah Family Lived with Dead Relative for Weeks

concealing death

A Hephzibah mom and her daughter have been arrested after authorities discovered they were living with the dead body of the mother’s son, authorities said.

Angela Mercer, 43 (left), and Deaidra Motley, 18, are accused of living and functioning daily from the residence with the body of 22-year-old Robin Adams. The victim is Mercer’s son and Motley’s brother, and he had been dead long enough that his body began to “mummify,” sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Carrier Jr. said in a press release.

The family was apparently living at the home at 4279 James Drive in Hephzibah when Adams died. “Adams suffers from a host of medical conditions which cause him to function as an invalid with the mental capacity of an infant,” Sgt. Carrier said. He used a wheelchair, according to neighbors.

The two women were reportedly living in the home with the maggot-covered body until Mercer was jailed Thursday on a traffic charges and an outstanding warrant. Motley was jailed Friday night.

Motley and Mercer are currently being held at the Richmond County Jail for the charge of concealing the death of a person. An autopsy of Adams’ body will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab and additional charges could be forthcoming, Sgt. Carrier said.

I lived beside this family for a couple years, she loved her son dearly but had it really hard, neither of the father’s supported her in helping with anything, she would get a job and would have to quit cause she couldn’t find anyone to watch Robin, drifts had a a rough part she didn’t get to have a life a like girl should of had. She would have to devote her time watching brother as well, I feel So sad for them I just know myself this isn’t. Something I would be seeing, only God and them know what really happened, I know when I watched Robin he had a problem keeping food down which the hospital had did surgery to try and make his food stay down, she took care of him daily always clean and feed, but I do feel drifts didn’t. Get to be. As a young girls life should’ve. been period her mom controlled everything that girl did. I just don’t understand this at all. Did she feel she couldn’t let him go I mean he was just like taking care of a baby, he was really small and skinny he looked nothing. Of his age never. I pray deidra stays safe and the lord keeps his hedges of protection around this child in the jail she really needs to talk to someone I know she’s really confused. Robin rest in peace lil man! God forgive!
