Paine College Shooting – Latest Press Release

This was released from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Sgt. Monica Belser at 6:47 p.m. Monday:

On Monday, May 5th, 2014 at approximately 1300 hours, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to Paine College to Haygood Hall at 1235 15th Street, Augusta Georgia in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, a male victim was found on the 3rd Floor with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported to Georgia Regents University Hospital Trauma Center for what is reported as a life threatening injury.

Paine College was placed on lockdown and Deputies and Investigators interviewed witnesses identifying the shooting suspect. During a search of the dormitories, the suspect was apprehended and taken into custody. He is still pending charges at this time. The suspect is a 21 year old male. The suspect was purportedly involved in an altercation with the other student.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office will be augmenting the Paine College Police to provide additional safety and security at Paine College until further notice. No other students were injured in this incident. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating another shooting that occurred the previous evening where a student was injured by debris from a blast through the wall. This matter is being investigated as well.

This is a joint release between the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Paine College Campus Police on an ongoing investigation in regards to this unfortunate incident.
