A Paine College student was caught with a gun on campus over the weekend and blamed his need for the gun on a jealous ex-girlfriend, a sheriff’s report said.
Tobias Veal, 22, was charged Sunday with possession of a weapon in a school building and booked into the Richmond County Jail.
Veal told officers that his ex-girlfriend had come to his dorm room Saturday and was angry that he was seeing another girl, a report says. He said the ex-girlfriend began banging on the door and kicking it, telling him that she “had some heat for his n***a a**.” Veal said he he opened the door, at which time the ex-girlfriend pointed a black handgun in his face.
“(Veal) then slammed the door shut and stated that he grabbed a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun to protect himself,” a deputy’s report says.
Paine College’s Public Safety Office received a call from the Resident Advisor stating that he was advised that there was a student with a gun. Public Safety Security then went to the Veal’s room. The suspect refused to open the door when prompted to, and the R.A. gained entry with a Master key. They asked the suspect if he had a gun, to which he responded yes and willingly gave them the firearm.
The report does not mention any charges against the ex-girlfriend or whether Veal’s weapon was loaded or not.

This case will be soon thrown out if he has a concealed permit or carrying permit….It is state law now that a student is able to have a firearm on any campus in Georgia. I don’t understand the whole I got a gun because of an ex-girlfriend alibi but Idk….

The college can still discipline him for violating there policy even if he is not charged criminally. But the law only allows possession in your car when it is parked on campus, not in campus housing.

This guy didn’t brandish the gun. He was in his room. I agree with you. This should be thrown out.
