Three local high school students were arrested early Sunday for allegedly stealing a street sign in Martinez.
Jordan Day, 17, of Martinez (from left), Matthew Tuschen, 17, of Martinez, and Ross Weglarz, 17, of Grovetown, were all charged with theft by taking.
Around 2 a.m. Sunday, a Columbia County deputy pulled over the teens in a blue Dodge Durango driven by Day and observed a county street sign in the rear of the vehicle, a sheriff’s report says.
The three teens were taken in for questioning and admitted using an Allen wrench to steal the county street sign at Collins Drive and Jessie Road. Two of the teens told authorities they attend Grovetown High School while the third attends Aquinas High School, the report said.

Can’t believe Matt was arrested…. He used to be so innocent.

HAHA! They tried to steal the sign in front of my house… they must have been under the influence or just really stupid because they were really loud and obvious and left my road saying they needed to come back with an allen wrench. Kids will be kids, but who does that in the middle of a neighborhood (it was only 10pm when they were outside of my house) ?

oh my god take this **** off the internet they are children, they do childish things.

I didn’t know there was a sign that said “Caution: ****** Crossing”. That’s pretty politically incorrect and offensive. Shame on these boys.

one of the boys’ families goes to my church, and I’m honestly more ashamed at the comments people are making than the crime itself. if it was someone you knew personally, I bet half of you would think twice before judging. you act like you were all saints when you were 17, l o l.

Score another victory for the local Barney Fife squad. Street signs, underage purchase of cigarettes, open containers…. We all sleep better at night knowing you guys are risking it all to protect us from these vicious criminals. I wonder if these guys had to ride to jail on the handle bars of one of the fruitcake bike officers.

It’s easier to arrest kids stealing signs then taking down drug dealers, rapists, and gang bangers.

Why ? I don’t get it ! With every thing else going on ! Really? Columbia county I really hope you are just so proud of yourselves ! You have brought in children yet again ! Are there no real bad guys over there ? No d.u.i.’s to catch at 2 am ? I think some one told me those signs are only about $ 10 for the county to make !

Just the thing kids need… more entitlement! You can break laws, sweetie… just petty ones though! Where do you draw the line? You want to live in a safe county but then complain that teenagers who are breaking laws, despite how petty, are being arrested… I don’t know about you but if my kid does something illegal, I want them to know the consequences, and I’d rather it be over something petty than just a slap on the hand and learning no lesson so they can make an even BIGGER mistake next time. No one is saying these kids are hardened criminals and need the book thrown at them but they were stupid and got caught. They shouldn’t get punished… why? I’m not judging them. I don’t think they’re bad kids because they did something stupid. But if you get caught, thats not the police officers fault.

They were let go with a warning last time this happened. This is why they were arrested.

Don’t be mad at the county for arresting “children”, be mad at the children for breaking the law. It’s dumb **** like this that wastes the time of the law enforcement from focusing on bigger issues. I’m sure they didn’t set up a sting op to catch these kids so give it a rest. Who cares how much the dang sign is anyway, I shouldnt have to help pay for new signs because some people don’t know how to raise their kids.

agree completely. whatever the situation, it’s against the law to steal a street sign. the problem here is not that their underaged or “children” as some may say. the problem is that these “children” had nothing better to do than BREAK THE LAW instead of adhere to it. plain and simple people… they broke the law, and they got arrested… that’s usually what happens… whether you think it’s justified or not.. it’s the law. i also agree that the police have more serious crimes happening out there than this one, but in the eyes of the law, if you break it, you get arrested.. doesn’t matter if you’re committing a robbery at the local 7eleven or stealing a sign… theft is theft.

They never caught the people who repeatedly stole our street sign! What is this world coming to?

I take offense to that im related to one and all three boys come from great families thanks! Yes stupid what they did but if thats the worse they do im pretty dang proud

I don’t think this shows anything about how they were raised or their family at all.. unless their families get them out of trouble and don’t make them face any consequences. Maybe seeing that there are consequences for their actions will make them think a little harder before committing a crime next time. But I do agree that if we let all teenagers who wanted a stop sign hanging in their room get away with stealing them then despite whether they’re $10 or $100 we would have to fund this as tax payers, and that’s not really something I’m interested in doing.

During the time it took to process these 3 for this “crime”, someone broke into my home and brutally beat me with a candlestick. I called 911 but all available dispatches were busy taking care of these wonderful young men. By the time my attacker had left and I had some not so attractive oval based bruises on my left temple, it was too late. Now I must change my name from Handsome McWomanizer to “Slightlyattractive McWomanizer”.
I hope your **** street signs were worth it, Columbia County.
