Another Attack in Downtown Augusta; Car Stolen

-

Richmond County authorities made a quick arrest in a man who attacked and robbed a woman of her car at 2:45 a.m. Friday on the 1100 block of Broad Street in Augusta, according to a press release.

Levon Smiley, 29, of Tallowtree Street, Augusta, was arrested just three hours after the alleged carjacking.

The victim, a 27-year-old Grovetown woman, told authorities that she was attempting to enter her 2006 Nissan Armada when she was approached by the suspect. She said the man assaulted her and stole her car.

Less than an hour later, investigators identified Smiley as the suspect and captured him at 5:48 a.m. Friday. He’s been charged with hijacking a motor vehicle and battery.

The woman’s vehicle was recovered on the 1700 block of Broad Street.

Smiley is a repeat offender who was sentenced to five years in prison in 2009 for felony theft, but a judge released him early after a 2010 hearing. He was also found guilty of criminal damage to property and multiple counts of child cruelty before a judge gave him probation, which he continues to serve. In two cases, a judge ordered mental health treatment for Smiley.
