Arrest Made in Deadly Augusta Shooting

-

An arrest has been made in connection with the June 2 shooting death of a man at an apartment complex on Wrightsboro Road, authorities announced Thursday.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Jerome Burley was found with at least one gunshot wound at The Landings at 237 apartment complex, formerly known as Fox Trace Apartments. Deputies responded to the scene around 8:54 a.m., and Burley was transported to Doctors Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:26 a.m.

Following an investigation, deputies identified a suspect vehicle and traced it to Thomson. With assistance from the Thomson Police Department, the vehicle was located and new leads were developed.

On Thursday, investigators detained 29-year-old Levaun Green Jr. in Thomson. After an interview with Richmond County investigators, Green was arrested and charged with murder and weapon possession. He has a history of drug and theft convictions in Richmond County.

“This arrest demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring that those who commit violent crimes in Richmond County will be pursued and held accountable,” said Sheriff Eugene Brantley in a press release. “We are grateful for the assistance from our partners in Thomson and proud of the swift work by our investigators. Justice will be pursued in every case – no matter where the trail leads.”

The investigation remains active. Authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Division at (706) 821-1020 or submit an anonymous tip through the department’s website.
