As Homicides Continue in Augusta, Here are 8 Unresolved Cases from Last Year

   Eight homicide cases from last year remain unsolved or have resulted in no arrest as the investigation continues. Here are the details of each.

HOMICIDE 6 – UNSOLVED

Hilton and Jeannette Turner

Hilton Turner Sr., 75, and Jeanette Turner, 73, were found dead in their home on East Hale Street on Feb. 17. Richmond County investigators interviewed people close to the couple but never made any arrests or released a possible motive.

In May, the sheriff’s office announced that the family’s children were putting up a $5,000 reward for info leading to an arrest and conviction. The sheriff’s office also announced that they believed the Turners were actually killed sometime after 6:40 p.m. on Feb. 16.

HOMICIDE 16 – UNSOLVED

Johnny Willingham, victim

Johnny Willingham, 33, was found fatally shot in his home on July 20.

Authorities responded at 12:35 a.m. that day to the intersection of Telfair Street and Battle Row for shots fired and an injured person.

“Upon arrival deputies located a male victim inside a residence on the 1900 block of Telfair Street,” sheriff’s Sgt. William McCarty said in a press release. “He was found unresponsive lying on the floor with at least one gunshot wound.”

No suspect or possible motive was released.

HOMICIDE 21 – UNSOLVED

Dominic Brown

Dominic Lamar Brown, 27, died Sept. 16, three days after he was shot at a gas station on Milledgeville Road.

Brown was shot at the Short Stop. Deputies who responded to the 5:18 p.m. shooting found Brown on the side of the building. The gas station had also been struck multiple times while two clerks and a female customer were inside. The customer’s Nissan Altima was also shot while occupied by her three children (ages 7, 4 and 1) and an adult male. None of them were struck by gunfire.

The sheriff’s office did not release any suspect information or possible motive.

HOMICIDE 24 – UNSOLVED

Corey Thomas, victim

Corey Lamont Thomas, 37, of Martinez, was shot Sept. 28 outside Level 9 on Damascus Road in Augusta. He was remembered as a father of two who had five siblings.

The sheriff’s office said the call was made at 1:15 a.m., and deputies discovered there were two other victims who were rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

HOMICIDE 27 – UNSOLVED?

Tekeil Lee Jr., 16, was fatally shot Nov. 1 on Plantation Road in Hepzibah, the street where he lives.

He was rushed to Augusta University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:47 a.m. Nov. 2 in the emergency room, coroner Mark Bowen said.

No arrest has been announced, but authorities have labeled it involuntary manslaughter, suggesting it was an accidental shooting.

HOMICIDE 29 – UNSOLVED

Frederick Nelson, victim

Frederick Nelson, 29, was fatally shot Nov. 3 on Tuttle Street.

Richmond County deputies responded to the 700 block of Tuttle Street in Augusta at 8:12 p.m. that Wednesday and found Nelson had been shot at least once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No suspects or motive have been announced.

HOMICIDE 30 – UNSOLVED

Khalil Baker, from Facebook

Khalil Baker, 23, was fatally shot Dec. 1 on Richmond Hill Road West.

Baker was shot at least one time on the block where he lives, coroner Mark Bowen said in a press release. Baker was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:35 a.m. that Wednesday.

There were recent reports that 2022 homicide victim Johndrick Oliphant was a suspect in the case. He was never charged, but the 19-year-old man was found dead Jan. 28 on Stone Road.

HOMICIDE 33 – NO CHARGES.

Dezmon Forester

Dezmon Forester, 24, was stabbed to death Dec. 30 on Tybee Court.

At 9:35 a.m. Dec. 30, deputies responded to 138 Tybee Court in reference to a domestic incident, a press release said. Upon arrival, deputies observed Forester with a stab wound to his side, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dora Wiggins was questioned and “released without charges at this time,” sheriff’s Sgt. Caleb Lee said. An incident report calls the death a “voluntary manslaughter.”

A review by the District Attorney’s Office is underway.
