Augusta Cops Find 18 Dogs in Powerless Home! Six were Dead!

-

An Augusta woman who was running a rescue shelter for animals out of her mobile home was arrested Wednesday after deputies found six dead dogs and 12 living ones abandoned in her home, a report says.

Stephanie Bowles, 38, of 1266 Alden Drive, was charged with two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

Deputies were called to the home Sunday to investigate animal cruelty reported by a neighbor. The witness said Bowles had been living there but recently moved out. Power had been cut last Friday.

What officers found was both disturbing and heart-breaking:

From a report by Deputy Burney Boyle: “Upon making entry to the residence, I observed two small white dogs laying dead around a food bowl and another laying next to the bedroom door on the left side of the residence still breathing but not moving. I observed another dog laying in the bed of the bedroom on the left side of the residence that did not appear to be moving or breathing. I heard several dogs in two of the bedrooms on the right side of the residence. …

“There was no water in any of the bowls inside the residence except in the right two bedrooms where the majority of the alive dogs were located. There was no food to be found in any of the rooms in the residence. The residence had a strong odor of urine and feces. The temperature during the day time on today’s date reached the high 90s with high humidity.”

Authorities say 18 dogs were removed from the residence, including six that were dead. A warrant accuses her of causing the deaths and harming the other 12 by “depriving them of adequate ventilation, food, water and sanitary conditions.

They were various breeds. The neighbor told officers that Bowles had been running a rescue shelter in the home. Animal Control was called to the home due to the conditions of the animals.

In a second warrant, Bowles is accused of causing the death of a chicken and harming other chickens at the same property by depriving them of adequate food, water and sanitary conditions.  In that case, Bowles had allegedly been raising several chickens and a rooster.
