Augusta Father Identified as Victim Found Dead Outside 15th Street Business

-

The Augusta man found fatally shot Friday morning outside a 15th Street business has been identified.

Marc Whitehead, 30, of Druid Park Avenue, was found dead around 7:43 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of DuraMed Medical Services, a medical supply store at 1543 15th Street in Augusta. It was located a half-mile from his residence.

Deputies responded at 7:43 a.m. Friday to an injured person and found the victim’s body, according to sheriff’s Sgt. John Perry. He had been shot at least once and was pronounced dead at 8 a.m.  No motive or suspect information has been released.

Whitehead was remembered online as a father and good friend who may  have been hanging around a bad crowd.

“I remember growing up in the sandbox,” Stephon Sims said on Facebook. “Love you and I wish I had the chance to see you or say goodbye my brother and friend… and I’m literally messed up and can’t even focus now . . . why did you have to leave so soon.”

Whitehead, who goes by the nickname “Durty,” was named as a suspect in a 2018 shooting at Bon Air Apartments. He was accused of shooting a man twice after a fight inside an apartment. But the charges were dismissed a year later after a motion was granted for immunity from prosecution, according to court records.

In a weekend post, Alphonzo Thompson said he had warned Whitehead about hanging around certain people.

“When I got back to the city… I felt it and beg[ged] you G,” Thompson said. “Someone got to answer to this. You was out the way G.”
