The quiet tranquility of Riverfront Drive in Augusta was disrupted early Friday when a fisherman made a grim discovery, prompting a swift response from local authorities.
According to a press release from Coroner Mark Bowen of Richmond County, the Coroner’s Office was alerted to the presence of a body in the river along 630 Riverfront Drive, which is a large open field.
The incident unfolded when a fisherman, whose identity remains undisclosed, stumbled upon the body of a man and immediately alerted emergency services by dialing 911.
In a statement released to the press, Bowen confirmed that the body has been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) laboratory for a thorough autopsy.
“Due to the condition of the body, a positive ID will have to be made,” Bowen noted.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed any details regarding the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding their demise.
