Augusta Murder: Victim Dies After Being Shot in Barton Village

-

A local man died Thursday night after being shot in the Barton Village community of Augusta, authorities said.

The coroner identified the man as Brandon Peebles, 24, of Girard, based on information from the victim’s mother. (The sheriff’s office identified the man differently, as Brandon Peoples of Augusta.)

The shooting happened around 10:45 p.m. Thursday on the 2300 Block of Prague Court. The victim was rushed to Augusta University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m. Thursday, Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Authorities say the victim had been shot in the upper torso. No arrest or suspect was announced. “The investigation is still ongoing and no further details are being released at this time,” sheriff’s Sgt. Caleb Lee said.

It’s unclear if the shooting is related to another one that occurred at about 2 a.m. Friday on the 2600 Block of Cairo Drive. A male victim sustained at least one gunshot wound to his leg in that case.

The Prague Court murder victim is already being mourned on Facebook, where he goes by Baron Samedi of Augusta.

“You were the first brother I ever knew. This hurts, but you left us with great memories. Fly high Baron Samedi,” said SaMaya Tyler.

Latashia Parrish reacted to the news: “Brandon don’t bother no one and he didn’t deserve this. Why? Why? He has a family that loves him and you took him from us! Why? What did he do for you to take his life?”

Johnna Whitehead recalls his sense of humor: “You always used to make jokes and keep us laughing all day. I remember this one joke you always used to say to all the girls: ‘Girl you look so good I’ll drank yo bath water.’ Used to make me laugh til I’m blue in the face.  Sucks you gone now.”
