Augusta Woman Killed in Wreck with Deputy; Officer was Rushing to Service Call

-

An Augusta woman was killed Wednesday night after wrecking with a deputy rushing to an emergency call.

The coroner identified the deceased driver as 34-year-old Diedra Briggs of Henry Circle.

The fatality happened on Highway 56 at Moore Road.  “A deputy was traveling south on Highway 56 responding to an emergency call when Briggs turned left in front of the patrol car,” Coroner Mark Bowen said. “Briggs was transported to Augusta University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m. Wednesday,”

The sheriff’s office has not released the deputy’s name, but a spokesman said the officer was seriously injured.

“It is reported that another vehicle turned into the path of the patrol car causing a collision,” sheriff’s Sgt. William McCarty said. “The deputy has sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.”

The Georgia State Patrol has responded to the scene and is conducting the accident investigation.
