Beech Island Man Arrested in Teen’s Hit & Run Death

A Beech Island man has been arrested in Thursday night’s hit & run death of a 15-year-old boy.
GilesIsaac Kelly, 33, is being held in connection with the death of teen Errik B. Giles (pictured at right), who was struck Thursday night and pronounced dead at the scene on Hammond Road in Beech Island.
“The incident most likely occurred between 6:00 and 7:00 pm,” Coroner Tim Carlton said in a press release. Mr. Giles was struck from behind as he walked on Hammond Road.”
Authorities say Kelly was driving westbound in a 2006 Cadillac SUV just after 6 p.m. when he hit the teen and kept going. He was captured about 1 am. Friday and is being held in the Aiken County Detention Center.
KellyWGAC’s Austin Rhodes is reporting that Kelly is one of the CSRA’s leading gay rights activists. “Kelly is well known as one of the organizers of Augusta’s Gay Pride celebrations and parade,” Rhodes said on Facebook. (Kelly is shown at right in a photo from his Facebook page.)
Debris from the scene was collected by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Newberry, and the Highway Patrol’s MAIT unit is investigating the incident along with the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
