Caught on Camera: Teen Vandalizes Evans Elementary

-

An Evans teenager broke into Evans Elementary School over the weekend and vandalized it — in full view of a security camera.

Zachary Hughes, 17, was arrested Saturday for burglary in the second-degree after he was identified through the surveillance camera, according to a sheriff’s report. Two juveniles, ages 14 and 16, were also connected to the vandalism and charged, authorities say.

Teacher Kristie Davis discovered the vandalism when she came to the school Saturday to get some paperwork. The suspects had gone into her portable classroom and drawn vulgar pictures on her board. The teacher also discovered damage to two other portables, where the suspects had sprayed a fire extinguisher and covered the interior of the rooms.

Principal Naesha Parks came to the school and pulled up security footage which showed Hughes climbing in the window of the first portable, a report says.

A deputy stopped a citizen on Leeward Drive and showed them a picture of Hughes, and the citizen identified the teen as a resident on that street.

Hughes was later arrested at his home. The juveniles were also charged.
