A Hephzibah mother was arrested for child cruelty and her live-in boyfriend is wanted after the woman’s young daughters were badly injured from abuse, including a broken leg.
Michaela O’Grady, 23, of Horseshoe Road, was arrested Tuesday. Authorities are currently trying to find her live-in boyfriend, Nathan Melton (pictured, above right).
The woman’s 3-year-old daughter showed up at the hospital Tuesday with a broken leg and bruises on her body. Initially, the mother told officers that the girl fell off of the bed while playing and injured her leg, a report says.
But O’Grady later confessed to lying to officers. She said she left her girls with Melton while she worked, a report says. She said Melton admitted spanking the 3-year-old child because the girl had urinated on herself. He also grabbed the 3-year-old girl around the ankle, a report says.
Melton also spanked her 4-year-old daughter with a belt for not listening to him, a report says. That child suffered bruises to her face, arms and legs.
Arrest warrants say O’Grady allowed her boyfriend to hit the 3-year-old child numerous times with a belt and twist her left leg. “She also failed to immediately get the victim medical attention after the assault,” the warrant says.
Melton, 28, is believed to be hiding in Martinez or Warrenton, authorities said. If you know where he is, please contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 706-821-1020 or 821-1080.
O’Grady remained in jail on Wednesday afternoon. DFACS has placed the children elsewhere.
