Child’s Body is Found in Aiken Home After Fire is Extinguished

-

A child’s body was found inside a home that caught fire Wednesday afternoon in Aiken County, according to Coroner Darryl Ables said.

Fire crews responded to a fire at 26 Independent Boulevard, near New Ellenton, and found the house fully engulfed in flames.

“After the fire was extinguished, the body of a child, with extensive thermal injuries, was found inside home,” the coroner said. “The child will be autopsied (Thursday) morning in Newberry, South Carolina for positive identification and cause of death.”

The child’s name was not released, but some witnesses said it was believed to be a girl in the fourth grade.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Ables said.
