Drowning Reported at Gem Lakes in Aiken; Body of Man is Recovered

Aiken police say the body of a black male has been retrieved from Gem Lakes after an apparent drowning Saturday night.

No name has been released. Here is the ADPS press release from Lt. Jennifer Hayes:

On June 25, 2022, at approximately 6:20 pm, Aiken Department of Public Safety was assisted by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources with the body retrieval of a black male from the recreational area of Gem Lakes in reference to a possible drowning. The nature of the death is still under investigation at this time.

Meanwhile, Coroner Darryl Ables said his office is investigating this week’s discovery of local resident Sean Cook in a cemetery in downtown Aiken.

“We are investigating this case,” Ables said.”A manner of death is pending autopsy and investigation.”

Before the discovery of his body, Cook had been reported missing and was last seen driving a white 2013 Ford Edge.
