The chairwoman of the Edgefield County Hospital Board was charged Thursday with embezzlement of public funds.
Connie Marie Sutton, 67, is accused of taking about $5,500 from the board for her personal use. She was arrested by agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) after an investigation was requested by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a warrant, Sutton withdrew the money from the board’s operating account and spent it on her personal needs between January 2020 and June 2020.
“Sutton was in a position of trust as Chairperson of the Edgefield COunty Hospital Board and performed various administrative and financial duties,” the SLED warrant says.
SLED says Sutton confessed to the crime. “All this done against the law peace and dignity of the State of South Carolina,” the warrant says.
Sutton is free on bond, according to the jail.
