Grandma Leaves 5-Year-Old Girl in Car Alone to Shop

-

A Hephzibah woman was arrested Saturday for leaving her 5-year-old granddaughter alone in a car outside the Tobacco Road Bi-Lo, a sheriff’s report says.

Laura Banks, 48, was charged with deprivation of a minor in the case.

Deputies were alerted to a little girl sitting alone inside a 2000 Buick Regal about 7 p.m. Saturday. The girl told a deputy that her grandmother was inside the grocery store, according to a sheriff’s report.

“The deputy spoke with the suspect who stated she left her vehicle running with her 5-year-old granddaughter inside the vehicle because her vehicle would not start back up and she did not want her vehicle to be stolen,” the report says.

Banks was arrested, and the girl was turned over to her father.
