Hephzibah Teen Charged in Death of Moped Driver

-

A Hephzibah teenager has been charged in the Aug. 1 accident that killed a moped driver on a local roadway.

Makayla Holton, 19, has been charged with misdemeanor homicide by vehicle and a central turning lane violation.

Daveon Sherrod, 21, was rushed to Doctors Hospital on Aug. 1  after a crash at Barton Chapel Road and Old Barton Chapel Road. He died three days later from his injuries.

The 19-year-old driver told authorities that she came up behind Sherrod’s moped and saw he was swerving all over the roadway and that he was driving with no helmet on. The teen driver said she decided to pass the moped driver because she was unsure of what he was doing. As she passed him using the center turning lane, Sherrod swerved to the left and side-swiped her car, a report says.

Sherrod lost control of the moped and was ejected, the report says. Sherrod was found at fault for failure to maintain lane while Holton was found at fault for improper use of the central left turn lane, the report says.

The case went viral after Sherrod’s mother falsely claimed online that the wreck was the result of a hit & run.  But the accident report from the sheriff’s office shows that Holton stayed on the scene and gave officers a full account of what happened.
