-

An elderly Augusta man was formally charged Monday in the weekend shooting death of a 65-year-old man, authorities said.

John Dickey O’Bryant, 86 (pictured) was charged with one murder and weapon possession in connection with the death of Karl Allen Hardge.

The victim was shot once in the upper torso and died at GRU Hospital around 3 p.m. Saturday.

The sheriff’s office did not release other specifics, but sources within the sheriff’s office have revealed to WGAC’s Austin Rhodes that the shooting suspect is a dementia patient who may have believed he was either under attack, or being held prisoner.

Authorities have revealed to Rhodes that the victim was on the phone with a 911 operator when the fatal shots were fired.
