Man Jailed in Hit & Run Death of Augusta Bicyclist

-

Suspect Christopher Provost was arrested Wednesday night in the fatality of a bicyclist.

Richmond County investigators say they “made contact with him” for questioning and then arrested him for the hit & run death of 42-year-old Dennis John Skillman.

Skillman was riding his bicycle to work at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday when a truck veered off the road and struck him. Skillman was wearing a reflective vest and was riding northbound on the 3500 block of Mike Padgett Highway in Augusta when the Dodge Ram pickup truck hit him. The truck’s driver then left.

Provost is currently charged with homicide by vehicle, felony leaving the scene and failure to maintain lane, according to the jail website.

“This case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office with additional charges pending,” sheriff’s Sgt. Monica Belser said in a press release.
