New District Attorney Jared Williams Pledges to Treat the Community ‘Fairly & Justly’

-

Guest column printed in The Jail Report on Nov. 13 from District Attorney-Elect Jared Williams:

I first want to give God the glory for the success of our campaign, as this was only possible through Christ who strengthens me. Thank you to the citizens of Richmond, Burke, and Columbia counties for entrusting me with the office of District Attorney. Whether you voted for me or not, I look forward to serving you and your families, and providing a safer environment for our kids.

My goals in the office can be summed up in one phrase: Reducing Crime by Preventing Repeat Offenses. If we can change an offender’s behavior and make him less likely to commit crimes, we will help him get on the right path. However, if an offender refuses to change his behavior, or his actions are a threat to the community, we will remove him from society. In either instance, our goal is to prevent the offender from committing the next crime or hurting another victim. We will achieve these goals by implementing the following:

  • Refocusing on Dangerous Crimes – Creating specialized divisions to combat the crimes that most directly impact community safety, including Violent Crimes, Sex Crimes, and High Level Narco-Trafficking.
  • Rehabilitating First-Time Offenders – Making sure first-time offenders do not return to the criminal justice system by providing the tools they need to succeed.
  • Rejuvenating Juvenile Justice – Keeping kids in classrooms and out of courtrooms by investing heavily in juvenile cases to get the best outcomes for our children, and providing services to keep them on the path to graduation.

Under my administration, the District Attorney’s Office will treat the community fairly and justly. Success will not be measured by how many people we convict. We will measure our success by how many lives we change. Through community-centered prosecution, we will provide safer neighborhoods for you and your loved ones. I am humbled by your confidence and trust in me, and I look forward to serving as your District Attorney.

Truly Appreciative,

Jared T. Williams, District Attorney-Elect
