Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run in Hephzibah; Suspect in Custody

-

A 24-year-old Hephzibah man was killed Monday afternoon in a hit-and-run crash on Windsor Spring Road, authorities confirmed.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at 2:08 p.m. to the southbound lanes near the 3600 block of Windsor Spring Road at Cross Creek Road, where they found a pedestrian lying in the roadway. The victim, identified as Taveon Wright, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:45 p.m. by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.

According to Coroner Mark Bowen, Wright was crossing the 3500 block of Windsor Spring Road when he was struck by a southbound vehicle.

The driver, identified as 45-year-old Chiquita Dawson, left the scene of the accident and parked her car down the street at Richmond County Fire Department Station 18, a press release says.

Dawson attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by Deputies. She was subsequently transported to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.  She has previous arrests for cocaine possession, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. The cocaine charge from 2001 got her a 4-year prison sentence, according to online records.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
