A Hephzibah man is dead following a pedestrian crash early Sunday morning in Augusta, and the suspect and vehicle were found a half-mile away, authorities said.
According to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen, 23-year-old Xavion Wimberly was fatally struck by a southbound vehicle while crossing the 3200 block of Deans Bridge Road. Wimberly was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:12 a.m. An autopsy has been scheduled.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene in front of Suz Lounge at approximately 3 a.m., where CPR was already in progress, according to Lt. James Kelly. Shortly after, the Coroner’s Office was contacted.
A suspect and vehicle were located about a half-mile from the site of the incident. The Sheriff’s Office has not released further details, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The victim is already being mourned online as a “cool dude,” with prayers being offered to family. On his Facebook page, Wimberly’s last post was sharing a message that said: “I have so much stuff I WANT but I have everything I NEED and I thank u for that Lord.”
