A Richmond County motorcycle cop is in good condition after wrecking Thursday afternoon while trying to chase down a speeder on Gordon Highway, authorities said.

Richmond County Deputy Phillip Wasson, who is a member of the Motorcycle Division, was running radar on Gordon Highway near the Broad Street Overpass. Deputy Wasson clocked a vehicle speeding in excess of 70 mph. Deputy Wasson activated his blue lights and pulled out onto Gordon Highway to stop the violator. As he was attempting to catch up to the vehicle, he changed lanes and struck another vehicle causing him to lose control of the motorcycle and crash. Deputy Wasson was ejected from the bike and struck the pavement.
Deputy Wasson was transported to Augusta University Medical Center E.R. by ambulance and is in good condition. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
Georgia State Patrol is conducting the investigation.
Deputy Wasson, 41, has been serving the community as a Richmond County Deputy for 10 years.
