Second Person Arrested in Armed Robbery of U.S. Postal Worker

-

An Augusta teen has became the second person arrested in the November armed robbery of a U.S. Postal mail carrier in the Apple Valley Subdivision.

Darrion Antwon Williams, 17, a resident of the Apple Valley Subdivision, was located at Cedarwood Apartments at 527 Richmond Hill Rd. West and taken into custody. A juvenile offender had previously been arrested.

Williams was arrested on a grand jury arrest warrant for armed robbery and weapon possession.

In addition to Williams’ arrest, two other individuals were also arrested in relation to the investigation. Chavonne Thomas, 35, the mother of Darrion Antwon Williams, was charged with a felony offense of giving false statements and writings. Carl Gant, 32, the uncle of Williams, was charged with a felony offense of harboring or concealing a fugitive.

The 24-year-old postal carrier was passing out mail around 4:55 p.m. Nov. 13 at 3461 Jonathan Circle when the robbery occurred, authorities said.

“He was stopped passing out mail when a black male wearing all black and a face mask ran up and grabbed his right arm and held it in place,” a sheriff’s report says. “Another black male wearing gray hoodie pushed a pistol into his chest.”

The robbers then took two items from him and ran off toward Marvin Griffin Road. Descriptions of the two items that were stolen are redacted in the sheriff’s report.

Sheriff Eugene Brantley emphasized the importance of community cooperation in addressing violent crime: “We must all work together to stop violent crime in our area. Victims are impacted often for years due to the actions of a small percentage of individuals within our community, and it isn’t acceptable.

He continued, “Parents, teachers, preachers, and family members often know when someone is heading down the wrong path, and we all need to step up to guide them toward better decisions. Additionally, after bad decisions are made, there will be consequences. Some parents and others may think they are helping by covering for their loved ones, but in reality, they are enabling them—often leading to additional charges and further harm.”

The sheriff said his agency is committed to working with federal and local partners to hold violent offenders accountable and ensure justice for victims.
