The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an aggravated assault that occurred Saturday evening on Interstate 20 westbound at mile marker 196, leaving two people injured by gunfire.
According to authorities, deputies responded to the area at approximately 4:29 p.m. after receiving reports of a person shot inside a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers discovered a gray Toyota Camry with multiple bullet holes and two wounded occupants.
The driver of the Camry told investigators that while traveling west on I-20, a blue Tesla pulled alongside them. A white female was reportedly driving the Tesla, and a Black male passenger allegedly leaned out of the window and fired between five to six rounds into the Camry.
The male driver was struck once in the left ankle. His passenger, a female, suffered a gunshot wound to her left shoulder. Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. A relative said the female victim suffered a collapsed lung, damage to the spine and paralysis.
After the shooting, the Tesla fled the scene, exiting the interstate at Exit 194 in Columbia County. Deputy Gianotti later located the Tesla on Banbury Way in Grovetown. The female driver was detained at the scene; however, the male suspect fled on foot and remains at large.
The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) was notified and responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
