Why is this case important now?

That is the case where he was charged with two counts of murder and other serious charges and then ultimately dismissed by Augusta District Attorney Jared Williams. His dismissal, setting Redfield free, came just two months before Redfield allegedly participated in the drive-by shooting that killed 8-year-old Arbie Anthony on 3rd Avenue as she was outside to pet horses. He is now the only person charged in that case.

Some have argued that the D.A. should never had dismissed all charges and could have prevented the girl’s death. And Williams defended his earlier decision on the day Arbrie was laid to rest.

Williams said the killings were the result of a chaotic gunfight at a nightclub between four gang members, two of whom died.

“The lead investigator testified that he could not determine who shot first,” Williams said. “Neither witness testimony nor physical and ballistic evidence could prove who shot whom. No firearms were recovered from the scene. Video of the incident did not show who shot first, preventing the State from proving that this was not self-defense or defense of others.”

Ja Brie Dominguez, 23, and Charles Lawson III, 28, died from gunshot wounds after a gunfight outside   Private I club on Thomas Lane on Dec. 7, 2019.

Antoine Redfield and Charvez Lawson were eventually charged in the case. During his initial interviews, Redfield, a convicted felon, denied ever having or shooting a gun. So the detectives went and got video from the Private I club.

Investigator Shane Van Dyke confronts Redfield with the evidence and gets him to admit lying.

Now, despite this video, Williams said it became clear the State could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Redfield shot for any reason other than to save his own life or his friend’s life, he said.

“While no prosecutor wishes to let violent gang members back on the street, no ethical prosecutor can try a man for murder without the evidence to prove it,” he said.

Who took issue with this decision? Natalie Paine, who was district attorney when the 2019 killings occurred. She argued that Williams should not have dismissed the murder charges and could have pursued other charges to keep the gang member behind bars.

“Those charges were supported by the evidence just as the gang charges would have been,” she said. “First Offenders and Convicted Felons are prohibited from possessing firearms in this state. Additionally, gang members engaging in a shoot out in the parking lot of a public establishment most certainly constitutes a violation of the Criminal Street Gang Act. …

“What I can unequivocally state is that nothing that I am aware of regarding the Lawson/Redfield case would have ever caused me to allow or consent to an outright dismissal.”

Meanwhile, no other suspects had been named in the girl’s death despite witnesses who say there were at least two people in the red 2020 Jeep Compass Trail Hawk used in in the killing.

“Further arrests are forthcoming as this investigation continues,” a sheriff’s statement said.
