Was Elderly Augusta Man Murdered Before Fire on Ellis Street?

Richmond County authorities are investigating this morning’s fire as suspicious after 77-year-old resident Hubert Lee Bailey Sr. was found dead.

Bailey (pictured) died in the fire at 2228 Ellis Street in Augusta, according to Coroner Mark Bowen. Bailey was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. Monday.

Bailey’s body will be sent to the GBI Lab for an autopsy on Tuesday morning.

“It is being investigated as a suspicious death,” sheriff’s Sgt. William Mccarty said Monday afternoon by email. “We are interviewing family, friends and any potential witnesses at this time. There are no arrests as of now.”
