A Waynesboro man has been arrested in connection with a car crash that killed an 8-year-old boy in Augusta on Monday – his birthday.
Lee Earnest Jones Jr., 49, is charged with misdemeanor vehicular homicide following the fatal collision that claimed the life of Camden Poole, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred around 1:04 p.m. at the intersection of Peach Orchard Road and Tobacco Road. Deputies responded to the scene and found two vehicles had collided.
Authorities say one vehicle, carrying two adults and a child, was traveling southbound on Peach Orchard Road. The other vehicle, driven by Jones, was heading northbound and attempting a left turn at the intersection when the collision occurred.
All three occupants of the southbound vehicle were taken to the hospital. The child, later identified as Camden Poole, died from his injuries at 2:50 p.m.
Online records show that Jones has a previous DUI conviction from 2010 and a speeding ticket issued in 2011, both in Richmond County. In Burke County, records show three previous DUI convictions from 2003, 2012 and 2017. Jones also has other driving-related charges over the last two decades in Burke County, including reckless driving, driving while license suspended and speeding.
