An Aiken couple are dead in a murder-suicide on Summerhill Avenue, leaving their five children without parents, authorities said.
Sheriff’s deputies answered a call at 428 p.m. Thursday to 3845 Summerhill Avenue in Aiken and found a man and woman dead in the master bedroom of their home.
An investigation determined that “37-year-old Yoni Vargas shot his wife, 33-year-old Rosa Salguero-Landaverde before turning the gun on himself and taking his life,” Coroner Darryl Ables said.
“It’s a pretty tragic incident. A husband kills his wife and himself and orphans their five children,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. “They were across the street. They are the ones that called for help.”
Vargas was arrested in 2016 for domestic violence in the second degree and traffic charges, but online records show only a conviction for driving without a license. There is no record for the outcome of the domestic violence charge.
Salguero-Landaverde will be autopsied in Newberry. No autopsy is scheduled for Vargas, the coroner said. The Coroner’s office and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are continuing with the investigation.
