Augusta Man Shoots Armed Schizophrenic Intruder Outside House

-

An Augusta man shot an armed schizophrenic suspect who was trying to get into his home Monday, authorities said.

The homeowner had initially confronted suspect Alden Williams on Kindling Drive around 7 a.m. Monday because Williams was acting weird with a gun out, authorities said. Williams walked up the street, and the homeowner then heard two gunshots. So the homeowner retreated to his home to arm himself, authorities said.

When the 23-year-old suspect returned and tried to get into the man’s house, the 53-year-old homeowner shot him. No charges have been filed against the homeowner.

Williams went to Augusta University Medical Center, where he then poked a female investigator in the buttocks while she was there to interview him, authorities said. After his release Tuesday, Williams was taken to jail for aggravated assault, weapon possession and criminal trespass. He also faces a misdemeanor sexual battery charge for allegedly touching the sheriff’s investigator.

Williams has been previously arrested twice for violence. In 2020, he was arrested for punching his mother in the mouth when she attempted to give him medicine for his Schizophrenia. That’s when she told authorities about his mental illness diagnosis, according to a sheriff’s report.

He got 30 days in jail for the assault, but that was only after a judge signed an order for inpatient commitment. He returned from treatment and pleaded guilty to domestic violence, getting a month in jail along with 11 months of probation and 80 hours of community service.

The suspect also has convictions for another domestic violence incident in 2017 as well as entering a vehicle to commit theft and criminal trespass, which all resulted in probation.
