Hephzibah High School Student Found with Gun in Bookbag

-

A Hephzibah High student remained in jail Thursday after being caught the day before with a gun in his bookbag.

Dreshawn Marquit Lloyd, 17, was charged Wednesday with weapon in school building, a felony. He’s being held without bond at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

An arrest warrant says he possessed a black Taurus 180 Curve pocket pistol at Hephzibah High School. According to the warrant, “upon detecting an odor of marijuana emitting from the accused’s backpack, Assistant Principal Frankie Wright conducted a search” of the bag and found the weapon.

Oddly, Principal Chris Nabahe sent parents a different version of how the gun was discovered in an email. “While students were taking the Georgia Milestones test, a cell phone began ringing in a bookbag that was separated from students,” Nabahe said. “During an administrative search to identify who the bookbag belonged to, a gun was located.”

The incident is being addressed by the Board of Education Code of Student Conduct and Discipline, the principal said.

Meanwhile, an Evans High School student was arrested Thursday for bringing a pocketknife to school. Aidan Beasley, 16, of Martinez, was charged with possessing a weapon in school building, a felony.

District police received a report that a student was showing a pocket knife to other students, Principal Wade White said in a letter to parents.

“Upon further investigation, no threats were made, and the object was confiscated and secured without incident,” White said.

“The student is being held accountable according to the code of conduct and has also been criminally charged. The school day was not interrupted.”
