Impaired Driver Kills Augusta Pedestrian, 3 Years After First DUI

-

A local woman was arrested Sunday for killing a pedestrian while under the influence of drugs, exactly three years after her first DUI arrest.

Meagan Monica Burton, 32, of North Augusta, was charged with felony homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs. She’s accused of hitting Barry Anthony Smith Jr., a 39-year-old man who was crossing Gordon Highway early Sunday.

Smith was struck by a westbound vehicle while trying to cross the 1800 block of Gordon Highway, and he was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:18 a.m. Sunday, Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Burton was charged exactly three years ago on Oct. 22, 2020, for DUI, failure to maintain lane, and too fast for conditions. At the time, her address was listed in North Augusta. According to online court records, the Richmond County case never went to trial and nothing ever happened to it.

Burton remained in the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Monday afternoon without bond.
