Richmond County Deputy is Latest Officer to Face Arrest for Criminal Activity

-

A Richmond County deputy was arrested Sunday for bringing in contraband to the jail, and he was promptly fired on Monday.

The sheriff’s office Criminal Investigation Division received information that Deputy Demondre Mahoney was involved with bringing contraband into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

“As a result of the investigation, Investigators determined that probable cause existed to charge Deputy Mahoney with Giving Convicts Articles Without Consent of Warden and Violation of Oath by Public Officer,” sheriff’s Sgt. John Perry said in a press release. “Deputy Mahoney was arrested and booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.”

Deputy Mahoney began his employment with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on January 9, 2021. Deputy Mahoney was assigned to Road Patrol and was terminated on June 5, 2023.

This incident will follow the same course as any other criminal investigation, Sgt. Perry said.

The officer’s arrest follows a long list of Richmond County deputies being criminally charged as Sheriff Richard Roundtree takes a zero-tolerance policy on criminal activity among the ranks. In April, Deputy Ellis Belton, 24, and Deputy Deborah Ritzy Griffin, 28, were charged with bringing in contraband.
