Aiken Man Surrenders After Standoff with Police; Suspect had Earlier Dispute with Neighbor Involving Gun

-

An Aiken man surrendered to officers Sunday evening after a four-hour standoff with police.

Donald Craig Jackson, 56, peacefully surrendered at 237 Cherokee Street SE, and he was arrested for discharging a firearm in the city limits, according to a ADPS press release.

Officers responded to an aggravated assault with a gun at the home at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, but police were unable to make contact with Jackson who was inside his residence and believed to be armed. SLED also became involved.

For several hours, officers tried to make contact with Jackson without success until he came out at 8:30 p.m., Lt. Jennifer Hayes said in a release. The man’s spouse also surrendered and was released.

The aggravated assault is still under investigation. FOX 54 is reporting that Jackson reportedly got into an argument with a neighbor leading to the aggravated assault. Authorities said a hand gun was involved in the assault. After the police were called, the husband ran reportedly inside his home.
