Augusta Man Accused of Hit & Run in Pedestrian’s Death

-

An Augusta man with active warrants is being charged in Tuesday night’s deadly hit & run in Columbia County that killed a pedestrian.

Michael Kilgore, 58,  is being charged with hit & run, homicide by vehicle and other traffic violation in the death of 62-year-old William Lass. The victim was previously listed as homeless or living in North Augusta.

Kilgore did not have a valid driver’s license or a valid tag when he struck the victim during rush hour Tuesday on Columbia Industrial Boulevard, authorities said. He then left without rendering help, authorities said.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office put out a Facebook post with pictures of the suspect’s older-model Ford 150 that was towing a trailer. The suspect was later identified as Kilgore, who has pending warrants out of Richmond County.

The suspect was also just convicted this fall of breach of trust with fraudulent intent in Aiken County. A judge gave him credit for 20 days spent in jail and ordered Kilgore to pay restitution.

Kilgore was also the subject of an Evan man’s complaint in 2020 when the resident said the handyman took $1,500 to build a stone retaining wall at his home and then disappeared and stopped all communication.
