Driver Charged in Deadly Hit & Run Near Augusta Country Club

A male pedestrian was killed Tuesday morning in a hit & run accident right outside Augusta Country Club, authorities said.

Wallace Wash, 69, suffered fatal injuries just after 8 a.m. Tuesday on Milledge Road at Gardner Street. He was killed just down the block from where he lived on the 700 block of Johns Road.

The driver who fled was captured nearby on the 2500 block of Wheeler Road. Pernell Lee Jr., 41, of Augusta, was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a license, and safe operations of radios & telephone required.

“The pedestrian was taken to the hospital for treatment where he would succumb to his injuries,” sheriff’s Sgt. Caleb Lee said in a press release.
