Felon with Six Prison Terms Wanted for Sunday’s Murder in Hephzibah

-

A  felon with a history of gun and drug crimes is wanted for fatally shooting a local man Sunday at Benson Apartments in Hephzibah.

Bennelle Evans, 38, is wanted for murder in the death of 24-year-old Gregory Campbell of Augusta, according to authorities. Other charges include aggravated assault, weapon possession, and weapon possession by a convicted felon.

Authorities say Evans shot multiple rounds as he chased Campbell and another man out of an apartment at 304 Williamsburg Drive. He struck Campbell but missed the other guy. Campbell died of his injuries at Wellstar MCG Health.

Evans has spent six stints in prison for dealing drugs and continuing to carry a gun despite his status as a felon. He was last released from state prison in 2019 but later served time in federal prison for his knowledge of two bank robberies.

As a teenager, Evans was charged with statutory rape but accepted a plea to a lesser charge in return for probation.

In 2016, he was armed when cops busted him for dealing marijuana and other drugs, and he got a three-year prison sentence but only served 15 months before his release.

In 2018, Evans made headlines when the FBI helped arrest him in connection to a robbery at the Fifth Thirds Bank in Augusta. Two years later, he pleaded guilty in federal court to misprision of a felony after the fact for having knowledge of that bank robbery and another one, after the fact.

But Evans was free by last summer when he was ticketed for a traffic offense.
