RICHMOND COUNTY: Suspect Arrested in Death of Homeless Man at Washington Road Hotel

-

Richmond County authorities have captured a suspect in connection with Friday night’s stabbing death of a homeless man at a hotel on Washington Road.

Brent Lee Allen, 32, of Statesboro, Ga., is facing a murder charge in the stabbing death of 37-year-old Terry Maurice Brown. The suspect has previous charges for cocaine and marijuana possession in Bullock County from 2019.

There is a conflict in where the murder took place. Both the sheriff’s office and coroner said the stabbing took place at the Super 8 motel at 3026 Washington Road in Augusta, but a warrant says the incident took place at the Days Inn at 3020 Washington Road. Witnesses say the stabbing took place at the Days Inn, and Brown stumbled over to the Super 8 for help and collapsed there.

Motel officials say Brown was known to frequent the Washington Road area, breaking into hotel rooms from time to time for a place to sleep. Allen’s history in the Augusta area is not as clear, and he has recent arrests in Bulloch County.

For his part, the victim spent much of his adult life in prison for a series of 2004 carjackings and robberies as a teenager in Augusta. When Brown was 18, he and a 15-year-old boy approached a man outside a gas station on Walton Way and asked for a ride. The man agreed. The teens then robbed the man of his Oldsmobile station wagon and fired two rounds at the victim’s feet as they drove off in his car.

The pair then robbed another victim of his wallet and 1995 Ford Aspire, so they both had vehicles. Minutes later, they robbed another victim in the parking lot of Wachovia bank on Gordon Highway.

Brown served 14 years in prison and got out in 2019. But he was back in prison a year later for a stealing video games from the Martinez Walmart, getting released in July 2021. Since then, he was arrested in February in Richmond County for violating probation on his carjacking sentences.

Allen is being held without bond at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
