Suspect From Get-N-Go Killing is Stabbed By Group of Cellmates

-

A day after his arrest for killing a 15-year-old Augusta boy, murder suspect Derrick Lyons Jr. was stabbed by a mob of cellmates in the jail, authorities said.

Lyons, 32, was stabbed in his side and back by a handmade shank around 4 p.m. Saturday inside the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. He was rushed to Piedmont Hospital and was listed in stable condition. A metal shank was found on the ground.

Surveillance video of the cell block showed six people attacking Lyons, but authorities were only able to identify four of them. Facing charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by an inmate are Andre Rountree, Kendrick Green, Kevin Lamb Jr. and Evan V. Smith.

Lyons is one of three Augusta suspects linked to Thursday’s shooting death of a 15-year-old boy outside a convenience store. Ike Romeo Lang, 18, and Dexter Romeo White, 41, are also facing charges in the death of the victim, Jordan Gaynor of Augusta.

Gaynor was shot while standing next to two friends outside the Get-N-Go at 2350 Windsor Spring Road. The suspects fired multiple shots, missing his friends but striking Gaynor in the upper body and killing him.

The stabbing continues a series of violent incidents at the Richmond County jail involving shanks. In April, seven inmates were wounded with shanks in a bloody fight, leading to new charges against nine men, authorities said.

Background on suspects in stabbing. Andre Rountree is linked to the brazen killings in September 2022 of two local teens inside apartments on Cascade Drive. He and another suspect are accused of opening fire on 19-year-old Kameron Tucker and 17-year-old Kentevios Wageman in an apartment full of witnesses.

Kendrick Green was 15 when he was arrested with three others in the 2020 fatal shooting of 27-year-old Donnell Graham behind the Pizza Hut on 2802 Wrightsboro Road.

Kevin Lamb has been previously charged with dealing Oxycodone and weapon possession. He was most recently arrested for an order to show cause from Superior Court.

Evan Smith has been arrested for hold from Superior Court and more.
