Teen Arrested in Armed Robbery of Augusta Postal Worker

-

Richmond County authorities arrested a local teen on Saturday in connection with the armed robbery of a postal carrier.

Joshua E. Turner, 17, and an unidentified suspect, are accused of holding up a mail carrier June 4 in broad daylight on Carmell Circle in Rocky Creek Mobile Home Park. Turner is accused of driving the getaway vehicle while the second suspect robbed the female carrier, authorities said

The 41-year-old carrier told authorities that she was delivering mail around lunchtime when a suspect approached her and asked if she had picked up his outgoing mail. She checked and didn’t see anything, and the suspect left. A few moments later, a male wearing red shorts, red hoodie and a ski mask approached her with a knife pointed to her chest, a sheriff’s report says.

“Give me the keys or I will kill you,” the suspect reportedly said.

The woman handed over the set of Postal Service master keys and the suspect ran off toward North Leg Road.

On June 6, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Turner was arrested Saturday, and he is being held without bond at the Richmond County Detention Center. It’s unclear if anyone has claimed the reward.

In an unrelated armed robbery arrest, Devayn Grissam, 15, has been charged with armed robbery at the Need More Kuntry Store on Windsor Spring Road in Hephzibah. Authorities say the suspect pointed a gun at an employee on Memorial Day and demanded the money from the register, leaving with $1,500 cash.

Grissam was arrested the next day and charged as an adult, leading to the release of his mugshot.

According to a sheriff’s report, a manager said he was having problems with two males that kept stealing from the store. An employee was inside the store around 7 p.m. on May 29 when he observed one of the males come into the store and grab some merchandise and then look around.

“Another one then ran behind the counter with a firearm and started robbing him,” the report says. “The two male subjects then ran out the store.”

Children between 13 and 17 years old are prosecuted as an adult in Superior Court if they are charged with one of Georgia’s “seven deadly sins.” Georgia’s seven deadly sins are murder, rape, armed robbery (with a firearm), aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery and voluntary manslaughter.
